Kournas Lake
48 km east of Chania and 5 km of Georgioupolis. A picturesque lake, the only one natural with sweet water, on the island. The mountains surrounding it are reflected in its calm waters. Lake Kournas cover a total area of about 160,000 square meters with a depth of up to 25 meters.
The name is derived from the Arabic world for lake. The southeastern bank is lined with olives threes and dense vegetation surrounds the scenic. A strip of white sand beside the lake provides an area for swimming and cafes, restaurant and taverns.Choices of taverns are available from which to enjoy the glistening charm of the lake whilst partaking in a selection of meat, fish and vegetarian dishes.
You can see strange looking pedaloes crossing in every direction, looking for the leaping goldfish and the sleeping beauty who only comes out at midnight, very few people have actually reported seeing them.
The old village of Kournas maintains aspects of traditional Cretan village architecture and there are several Bysantine churches.
Between Kournas Lake of and the village, at 4,8 km from the intersection with the highway is the cave of Kournas with an excellent view of the lake. The cave is 35 meters in depth with stalactites, stalagmites and natural pillars.
This cave can be reached by path from the main road, near the tavern. Ask at the tavern for the direction, the owner is very helpful.
